Homer – Community Spotlight

Affectionately referred to as a “small drinking village with a fishing problem,” Homer is a great choice for those who love the ocean, the arts, and prefer a little milder weather. It’s easy to bike down to the world famous Homer Spit and watch the boats come in at the harbor, or watch the sea otters play in the bay. With a population of just under 5000 people, this city is smaller than neighboring Soldotna or Kenai but still has the convenience of in-town living. There are several notable events that take place in homer such as the Homer Halibut Derby or the Shorebird Festival. Homer residents are known for being more eco-friendly, more liberal leaning, but just like anywhere in Alaska all are welcome! Nearby traditional Russian villages give the town a rich cultural heritage. Homer also has a hospital, airport, and branch of the local college.
